IOP (intensive outpatient program)
More support, without stepping away from your life
online therapy also available
What is an intensive outpatient program?
IOP meets three days a week, three hours at a time, for people who need more than weekly therapy but don't need a hospital stay. Sessions run in person at our Reno office, with an online option for anyone joining from Carson City or beyond.
At LifeQuest, it's built specifically for adults working through depression, anxiety, trauma, and other mental health conditions, with real structure to support real progress, not just a place to check in once a week.
Who IOP is for
Is intensive outpatient care the right level of support for you?
IOP sits in a real middle ground, not entry-level therapy, and not inpatient care.
It's often the right next step once weekly therapy isn't quite enough anymore. Programs include group therapy, individual counseling, and practical skill-building.
You've noticed more bad days than good ones lately, and it's starting to affect the basics, sleep, eating, just getting through your day.
You're ready for real momentum, not just checking in once a week and hoping things shift on their own in between.

Conditions we treat
What IOP can help with
Relationship & life stressors
Ongoing strain from relationships, work, or major life changes that's become hard to manage alone.
Mood disorders
Mood swings or instability that a once-a-week check-in hasn't been enough to steady.
Depression
A heaviness that's affecting your ability to function day to day, not just your mood.
Anxiety disorders
Worry or panic significant enough that it's interfering with work, school, or daily routines.
PTSD & trauma
A trauma-informed approach for memories or experiences that are still affecting you today.
Trauma recovery
Working through what happened, without rushing it. There's no requirement to relive every detail before you're ready, the goal is progress, not pressure.
Emotional regulation
Real tools for the moments things feel like too much. It's not about avoiding the feeling, it's about having a way through it instead of getting stuck or swept away.
Stabilization
Getting solid ground back under you before layering on anything else. For a lot of people, this is the first real relief they feel, before the deeper work even starts.
A typical day in the program
Walking into something new for three hours a day is a real adjustment, and it's normal to feel nervous about that before your first session. Each session moves through skill-building exercises, guided discussion, and hands-on practice, led by your treatment team.
You won't be expected to have it all figured out on day one, or any day, honestly. The structure is there to support you, not to test you, and there's no version of this where you're doing it wrong.
Just yourself. We'll walk you through everything else on your first day, no prep required, no reading ahead, nothing to get right before you even start.
Three hours, split into shorter stretches with real breaks in between, not one long sitting. It's built so the day feels workable, not like something to just push through.

questions about IOP (intensive outpatient program)
A few things people usually ask
Do I need a specific diagnosis to qualify?
No specific diagnosis is required. What matters is whether you need more support than weekly therapy provides, that's determined through a real conversation, not a checklist.
What if I can't attend all three days some weeks?
Talk to your team about it. Consistency matters for how well IOP works, but life happens, and we'd rather work with you on it than have you drop out entirely.
Will this affect my job, do I have to explain it to my employer?
That's between you and your employer, we won't reach out to anyone on your behalf. Some people use FMLA or a flexible schedule to fit sessions in, others simply treat it as a personal appointment. We can talk through what makes sense for your situation.
Is IOP only for people in crisis?
No. Plenty of people start IOP proactively, when things are getting harder but haven't reached a breaking point, precisely to avoid getting to crisis.
Weekly therapy hasn't been enough, but is IOP too much?
That's exactly the kind of question a free assessment is for. We'll talk through what's going on and help you land on the right level of care, IOP or otherwise, no pressure either way.
Can I move to weekly therapy once I'm ready?
Yes, that's the typical path. Most people step down to individual or group therapy once IOP has given them the extra support they needed, so progress keeps building instead of stopping cold.
Can I have individual therapy and IOP in the same day?
No, Insurance doesn't allow it.
